Homeless man saves the hostage woman but dies after shot by gunman (criminal)

Police shot and killed a gunman after he opened fire on a homeless man (Francisco Erasmo Rodrigues de Lima, a 61-year-old) during a hostage situation in front of the Sao Paulo Cathedral, Friday.

The gunman, 49-year-old Luiz Antonio da Silva, reportedly took a woman hostage in the cathedral earlier in the day. When a homeless man named Erasmo Francisco Rodrigues de Lima saw the incident unfolding he tried to intervene. Silva and Lima got into a brief scuffle and Silva shot Lima several times, killing him on the steps of the cathedral in front of a crowd of onlookers. Police then opened fire on Silva, killing him.

Erasmo Francisco Rodrigues de Lima is probably someone who would be judged harshly by many, yet he did something incredible. He sacrificed his own life to save the life of a woman being held hostage at gunpoint.

The gunman was 49-year-old Luiz Antonia da Silva. He previously served 22 years in jail for theft.
